By 1916, 25,000 men had been recruited to the secret Corps of Royal Engineers Tunnelling Companies; many were volunteer soldiers from mining communities. The trained miners dug the tunnels and laid explosives. Infantrymen removed the spoil in sandbags and Officers used Geophones to accurately monitor enemy location and activity.
The bronze plaque was sponsored by the Friends of Hednesford Park.
