For over two hundred years boys worked underground for very little money labouring for the miners or dragging coal carts or tubs. Some worked alongside their fathers such as this lad carrying spare pick heads. In 1842, Parliament introduced a minimum age of ten for boys to work underground.
The bronze plaque was sponsored by Sir Michael & Lady Parkinson & family
